Chapter 11
As Marquis and I walked into my dark apartment, I turned on a lamp that sat on the end table next to the love seat. Then I extended my hand, pointing to a spot on the love seat, offering Marquis a place to sit. When he took me up on my offer, I sat on the left side of him and rested my elbow on my knees. Then I covered my face with the palms of my hands.
“I can remember the day like it was yesterday,” I began telling Marquis about my past. And as I spoke, the thoughts roared through my mind loud and clear, taking me back to that horrible place and breaking down the walls I had built to keep them from ever coming to my memory again.
“Golden, go see why Tia is crying. That girl gets on my darn nerves, all she does is cry,” Linda said as she prepared dinner for her man.
I got up from the couch to see why my two-year-old sister was screaming at the top of her lungs. As soon as I reached her, I picked her up to see what was the matter. “Linda, she is wet and she pooped,” I said, when I smelled the odor from her diaper.
“Well change her!” Linda yelled.
“She doesn’t have any more diapers!” I yelled back.
Who does Linda have in her room now? I wondered. Every other day there was a different man.
Linda, my biological mother, was so beautiful to me. She had long, dark wavy hair that she would pull back in a ponytail. Her skin was a perfect caramel tone and it was flawless. Her beautiful smile would light up a room. And when she didn’t have liquor in her system she was gentle and loving, but her not being drunk was a rarity which left us rarely likely to find her sober. She loved her men and her liquor.
Every now and then I would smell a funny odor seeping from underneath her bedroom door. Later I found out that smell was from the crack that her and her male companion smoked. It saddened me that my mom did drugs, but I was too young to do anything about it, so I never spoke of it to her and she darn sure never spoke of it to me.
Linda didn’t like me calling her Mom, she complained that she looked too good to be caught in public with anyone hearing a ten-year-old calling her mom. So she demanded that I call her by her first name. That was the beginning of my disconnect from her.
As long as I could remember, Linda had always paid more attention to the men that she hid in her room. She was always so focused on them that she made me care for Tia like I was her mother. It seemed that being a mother was getting in the way of her enjoying her life.
I loved my little sister, she was so pretty. She resembled Olivia from The Cosby Show with her sandy brown hair and her big brown eyes.
